Indirect facilitation as a structuring mechanism of submersed aquatic plants : a buffering role under biotic and abiotic constraints

چکیده

Direct facilitation among plants has recently been included into the humped-back diversitybiomass relationship along environmental severity gradients. However, recent evidence stresses the occurrence of indirect facilitation due to biotic disturbance under a wide range of environmental severity, and including indirect facilitation will thus bring these conceptual frameworks up to date. We propose a new conceptual model of variation in plant interactions along both biotic disturbance and environmental severity gradients, combining earlier models and theories into an integrated approach. This response surface model underlines a peak of direct/indirect facilitation related to hot-spots of diversity in intermediately severe and biotically disturbed environments, and explains how plant communities might expand into, or be excluded from, harsh and biotically disturbed environments.

Competition and Facilitation: a Synthetic Approach to Interactions in Plant Communities

Interactions among organisms take place within a complex milieu of abiotic and biotic processes, but we generally study them as solitary phenomena. Complex combinations of negative and positive interactions have been identified in a number of plant communities. The importance of these two processes in structuring plant communities can best be understood by comparing them along gradients of abio...

Climate extremes are associated with invertebrate taxonomic and functional composition in mountain lakes

Climate change is expected to increase climate variability and the occurrence of extreme climatic events, with potentially devastating effects on aquatic ecosystems. However, little is known about the role of climate extremes in structuring aquatic communities or the interplay between climate and local abiotic and biotic factors. Here, we examine the relative influence of climate and local abio...

Do biotic interactions modulate ecosystem functioning along stress gradients? Insights from semi-arid plant and biological soil crust communities.

Climate change will exacerbate the degree of abiotic stress experienced by semi-arid ecosystems. While abiotic stress profoundly affects biotic interactions, their potential role as modulators of ecosystem responses to climate change is largely unknown. Using plants and biological soil crusts, we tested the relative importance of facilitative-competitive interactions and other community attribu...

Trends of superoxide dismutase and soluble protein of aquatic plants in lakes of different trophic levels in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China.

A limnological study was carried out to determine the responses of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and soluble protein (SP) contents of 11 common aquatic plants to eutrophication stress. Field investigation in 12 lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River was carried out from March to September 2004. Our results indicated that non-submersed (emergent and floating-leafed) p...

ERDC/TN APCRP-EA-07, "Modeling the Impacts of Suspended Sediment Concentration and Current Velocity on Submersed Vegetation in an Illinois River Pool, USA

PURPOSE: This technical note uses a modeling approach to examine the impacts of suspended sediment concentrations and current velocity on the persistence of submersed macrophytes in a shallow aquatic system. Studies were conducted on Peoria Lake, Illinois, spanning historical times when a meadow-forming species (Vallisneria americana) successively thrived and disappeared, and current times when...
